In the middle of Florida’s wilderness, a new detention center for migrants is being built. Trump travels to the opening – and explains in his own way what possible breakouts should threaten.
US President Donald Trump warned of attempts to escape before the opening of a detention center for migrants in a swamp area in the state of Florida. Outbreaks would have to know how to escape alligators. If you want to flee, you have to learn to run away properly, said the Republican when asked in Washington-and painted a zigzag pattern in the air with his hand: “Do not go straight out. So run-then your chances rise by about one percent.”
A reporter had asked him beforehand whether the idea behind the new detention center was that fleeing migrants were eaten by alligators or snakes. Trump replied: “I guess that is the concept. It’s not a nice business.” Snakes are quick, he continued and then went into the route in front of alligators.
The president made the comments before making his way to Florida to take part in the opening of the detention center. The facility is located in the heart of Everglades – the largest subtropical wilderness of the United States. The US government describes the prison informally as “Alligator Alcatraz”.
Spokeswoman: “Efficient and inexpensive way”
The day before, Trump’s spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt had given details of the project. There is only one street that leads to the institution. The terrain is isolated, surrounded by dangerous wild animals and mercilessly.
The facility offers up to 5,000 beds for “criminal illegal foreigners” and should be an “efficient and inexpensive way” in order to implement Trump’s announced mass deportations. The location in the middle of the swamp should scare off possible outbursts, emphasized Leavitt.
The term “Alligator Alcatraz” alludes to the notorious Alcatraz prison in front of San Francisco. A few weeks ago, Trump had announced that he wanted to put the legendary island institution back into operation in order to accommodate severe criminals. At the time, it was checked whether this was legally and logistically possible.
From 1934 to 1963 Alcatraz was the most feared prison in the United States. The rock island was considered outbreak -proof and was used as a place for particularly dangerous criminals. Today “The Rock” is a listed and nature conservation.
