Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin have spoken together – the first time in two and a half years. At the war in Ukraine, their positions were again widely apart.
France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Kreml boss Vladimir Putin have been talking to each other for the first time in more than two and a half years. As the Élysée Palace announced after the two-hour conversation between the two, be it about the Iranian nuclear program and the Russian attack war on Ukraine.
With a view to Iran, Macron emphasized that I wanted to search for a diplomatic solution. This should enable a permanent regulation of the nuclear theme, the question of the Iranian rockets and the regional role of the country. From France it was said that both politicians had decided to coordinate their procedures and to exchange ideas again soon.
Kremlin insists in known positions
With a view to Ukraine, Macron called for a quick ceasefire and the start of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The last phone call of the two was in September 2022.
The Kremlin confirmed the phone call. In addition to the Middle East, it was also about the situation in Ukraine. Putin explained Macron that the causes of the conflict in Kiev had to be removed. It is also necessary to recognize the reality on site.
Vladimir Putin wants more land from Ukraine
The Kremlin chief once again pushed responsibility for the Ukraine war he ordered and renewed his regional claims in the neighboring country. In addition to the Crimea, which was annexed in 2014, Russia also demands at least the four Eastern Ukrainian areas of Luhansk, Donetsk, Cherson and Saporischschja. Most recently, Putin also emphasized that he wanted to create a “buffer zone” in the Ukrainian border area. This would have further Ukrainian areas under Moscow control.
