More than three months ago, the arrest of the Mayor of Istanbul triggered a political quake in Turkey. 100 days later, many drove on the street again.
In Istanbul, thousands of people demonstrated 100 days ago against the arrest and removal of the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamgolu. In front of the city administration, in speech choirs they called slogans such as “against fascism, shoulder on shoulder” or “President Imamoglu”. His CHP party had called for the rally.
The popular politician and promising challenger of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was arrested and discontinued on March 23. Numerous other people from his environment and his party were detained in several arrest waves. His party nevertheless set him up as a presidential candidate. The next regular elections are to take place in 2028.
Türkiye: Erdogan takes action against CHP in Izmir
The protest falls along with another violent blow for the Imamoglu party: In the morning, more than a hundred people were arrested in Izmir due to corruption investigations. The party sees itself as a victim of a judiciary instrumentalized by the government. President Erdogan, on the other hand, repeatedly confirms the independence of the judiciary.
The CHP, currently the largest opposition party in Türkiye, has emerged from the past nationwide local elections. For the first time, the AKP of Erdogan landed in second place in a nationwide election in its history.
