Trump’s planned tax law also encounters resistance from some Republicans. Can the US President prevail?
The decisive vote on the controversial tax law of President Donald Trump in the US House of Representatives has been delayed for several hours.
The Republican Chairman of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, asked the MPs on Wednesday afternoon (local time) to return to their offices, while the voting procedure remained unfinished. The reason for this was the uncertainty about the outcome of the vote in the face of several conservative members who threatened to block the law.
The package baptized by Trump “Big Beautiful Bill” (Big Beautiful Law) is also controversial in the Republican Party – especially because of the high debt admission. With a narrow majority of just eight seats in the House of Representatives, the presidential party cannot afford more than three against their own camp.
Also some Republicans against Trump’s law
So far, five Republicans, together with all Democrats, rejected the necessary procedural step to enter the law, as reported. That would be more than enough to block the project if nobody would change his opinion. According to the “New York Times”, another eight Republican MPs refused to coordinate at all.
In the Senate, the law had only received a majority with the voice of US Vice President JD Vance the day before. It includes tax reliefs, especially for wealthy and more money, for example for border protection. In return, higher debts and cuts are planned for the social. After the tight approval of the US Senate, Trump hopes for a final confirmation of his tax law by the House of Representatives.
The template is “President Trump’s agenda and we make it a law,” said Johnson before the vote. The MPs of his party are “ready to end the work”. Trump wants to put the law into force with its signature until the independence day on Friday.
New debts
The US President wants to implement central election promises with the tax law. This includes tax reliefs and more money for border protection and defense. New debts and cuts in health insurance are planned for financing for low-income US citizens. Especially because of the impending record debt, there had been resistance in the Trump camp. The US President commented on the previous controversial voting situation on the Truth Social Network with the words: “It should be easy for Republicans to be right.
Sharp criticism of the planned law came from the opposition Democrats: their minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, accused the Republicans of “betraying the American people” and enabling a “tax gift for billionaires”. These now suffered millions of people who lose their social security or school lens.
