No electricity tax reduction for everyone: The coalition will reject private consumers because the money is lacking. The Chancellor sees a new “honesty” as a principle of government action.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has defended the coalition’s no to reduce electricity tax for everyone with the argument of the tight health insurers. In a written statement, he pointed out that private households, craftsmen and medium -sized companies were also relieved, albeit elsewhere. “I am aware that an even higher reduction is promised in the coalition agreement. But all plans from the coalition agreement are subject to a reservation of funding,” said the CDU leader. “We can only spend the money we have. And we spend a lot of money.”
“We want to further reduce electricity costs if we have the financial scope for this,” promised Merz. However, he emphasized that the federal government wanted to act “honesty”. “Our public households will come under pressure in the next few years, they will hear the word consolidation much more often.”
The heads of the Union and the SPD decided on Wednesday evening to expand the planned electricity tax reduction to private consumers and all companies. It remains with the cabinet decision, according to which the tax is only reduced for industrial companies and for agriculture and forestry.
