Cyber attacks on companies and administrations have increased. Protection against such attacks is just as important as military protection, says the minister.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has announced increased measures against cyber attacks. “We are concerned with developing a cyber dome for Germany,” he said when visiting the Federal Office for Information Technology (BSI) in Bonn. This means “that we think of military protection and cyber protection – civil protection – together”.

Here the BSI plays an important role with its national IT position center, said Dobrindt. For 2026, a “growth in the finances of around 50 percent” is planned for the BSI to strengthen the area of cyber security. It is about the protection of computers and computer networks against attacks.

Number of cyber attacks has increased significantly

Dobrindt had already announced a “cyber dome” as a digital protective shield against espionage and sabotage on Sunday during a visit to Israel. Germany wants to benefit from Israel’s experience and work closely with the country.

“The abstract threat situation is high in the cyber area,” said the minister in Bonn. There was a significant increase in cyber agencies – both for companies and in administrations. Last year there was a record of threats, for example by encrypted data from companies to blackmail companies. The BSI provides companies and administrations important assistance in the development of defense mechanisms.
