Since the attack on Ukraine, Russia has itself internationally diplomatic problems. Moscow is now the first state to recognize the previously largely isolated Taliban government in Afghanistan.
As the first state worldwide, Russia has recognized the Taliban government almost four years after its reorganization in Afghanistan. “We assume that the act of official recognition of the government of the Islamic Emirate Afghanistan gives an impulse to the development of productive bilateral cooperation,” said the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Moscow also wants to grant Kabul support in combating terrorism and drug trafficking, it said.
The Foreign Ministry of Taliban spoke on the online platform X of a “historical step” for the relationship between the two countries. Russia sets a good example of other countries, the Islamists said.
The Taliban have been criticized for the massive circumcision of women’s rights since their reorganization in August 2021 and are largely isolated. However, neighboring countries in particular maintain a more pragmatic handling of the Islamists.
