Poland: 5,000 soldiers should help with border controls

Poland prepares controls on the border with Germany and Lithuania. Soldiers are used as reinforcements and the Air Force wants to use drones to monitor.

The Polish army supports the controls planned from Monday on the border with Germany and Lithuania with 5,000 soldiers. This was announced by the general staff of the army on X. In addition, the Polish Air Force will control the border areas from the air with drones.

Some soldiers take part in the controls of the border protection, mainly men and women from the volunteer home protection associations and the military police. Others take on “tasks in connection with the leadership, logistics, training and the general security of the operations”.

Poland’s army has been helping border protection for years to guard the border with Belarus, which is equipped with a high fence and surveillance systems in order to make migrants make irregular entry into the EU.

From July 7, Poland wants to temporarily introduce its own controls on the German-Polish border in response to German border controls. Germany has been checking randomly on the border with Poland since October 2023 to stop irregular migration. Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had more intensive border controls shortly after the new Federal Government started in May. At the same time, he ordered that asylum seekers can also be rejected at the border in the future.
