After the war with Israel, Iran continues to confront the international nuclear energy authority. A parliamentarian describes the inspectors as spies. Experts leave the country.
The conflict between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA is coming to a head. After the cooperation with the UN atom observes, IAEA’s inspectors left the country on Friday, as the organization in Vienna announced on the X platform. The team stayed in the country during the recent war and has now made its way to Vienna, it said.
According to diplomatic circles, only a few IAEA specialists in the Islamic Republic were recently. An IAEA spokesman did not answer how many there were, and whether all inspectors came out.
IAEA is pushing for the recovery of the control inserts
On Wednesday, Iran formally suspended the cooperation with the IAEA. The inspectors had no more access to the nuclear facilities since they were bombarded and damaged in the war by Israel and the USA. It is extremely important that the IAEA spoke to Iran about the as soon as possible resumption of its indispensable control operations in Iran, the IAEA quoted its boss Rafael Grossi on the X.
According to the law adopted in Iran, the cooperation with the IAEA should be exposed to until the security of Iranian nuclear systems is guaranteed. The National Security Council should decide to resume the collaboration if the conditions are met.
IAEA boss Grossi in the focus of Iranian hardliners
Members of the Iranian parliament had previously pushed to designate the inspectors. The “remaining spies” of the IAEA will soon be expelled from the country, the ultra-conservative MP Amir-Hussein Sabeti had said according to the Iranian media reports that matched.
In the course of the war, Iran’s government of the IAEA accused of legitimizing the Israeli attacks with a critical report. Grossi was then defamed as an Israeli spy. Against this background, the daily newspaper “Keyhan” – mouthpiece of the hardliners – called for the “arrest and execution” of the diplomat. This triggered great outrage in the West.
Waffenruhe after 12 days of war
Iran and Israel had agreed on a ceasefire last week after the bloody, twelve days of war. This was taught by the United States after they had entered the war and had attacked the three most important nuclear facilities with bunkerbreaking bombs.
Officially, Israel justified the war with the threat of Iran’s controversial nuclear program. Western governments fear that Tehran is striving for nuclear weapons. Tehran rejects this. IAEA boss Grossi had warned before the war that attacks on the nuclear facilities could move the Iranian leadership even more to the construction of atomic bombs.
Meanwhile, reports about possible new negotiations between Washington and Tehran are increasing. Before the outbreak of the war, the United States and Iran had had discussions about the nuclear program for around two months. A sixth round of negotiations was scheduled for only two days after the war started. After that, the Iranian government showed little willingness to resume the discussions and led to a lack of trust.
According to the US news portal “Axios”, there are preparations for a meeting between Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi and the US specialist Steve Witkoff in Oslo next week. The exact date is not yet known. According to the online portal “Amwaj”, which maintains good contacts to Tehran, the Iranian government approved the meeting. It is unclear whether the Golf state of Oman appears as an intermediary as before.
