IAEA: Ukrainian nuclear power plant Saporischschja temporarily without electricity
After a temporary failure of its power supply, the Ukrainian nuclear power plant Saporischschja gets energy again, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The failure took three and a half hours and clarified the precarious security situation, wrote IAEA boss Rafael Grossi on the platform X. Previously, the power plant management used by Russia and the Ukrainian network operators had already confirmed the repair.
This was already the ninth time during the Ukraine war and the first time since the end of 2023. The nuclear power plant had temporarily dependent on the stream of its emergency electricity diesel generators. The cooling systems of the removed reactors require a stable power supply.
The Russian Saporischschja nuclear power plant is the largest nuclear system in Europe. The six nuclear reactors have been switched off for a long time. The Ukrainian side attributed the situation to Russian shelling
Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, the IAEA has played a central role in protecting and monitoring the condition and the security of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants. She regularly sends experts teams on the active reactor locations in Riwne and Chmelnyzkyj and has been in the Saporischschja nuclear power plant since September 2022, which has been under Russian control since March 2022.
