The trend is reinforced: Fewer people come to Germany with a protective request. This also has to do with the new location in Syria.
The number of asylum applications in Germany fell significantly in the first six months of this year. This emerges from current figures from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). After that, 61,336 people submitted an application for protection in Germany for the first time in the first half of the year. First, the “Bild” newspaper reported on the decline of almost 50 percent compared to the same period last year. The figures are also available to the German Press Agency.
In addition to the gradually introduced stationary controls at all German land borders, measures from Balkan countries should also have contributed to the reduction of irregular migration to this development.
Another factor is the changed location in Syria, where long-term power holders Bashar al-Assad had been overthrown in December. Syria, the main country of origin of asylum seekers in Germany for years, was 15,127 applications just behind Afghanistan in the first half of 2025, which now leads the list of the most important countries of origin with 15,181 first. According to Turkish government, more than 273,000 Syrians voluntarily returned from Turkey between December 9 and mid -June.
