Elon Musk’s new party – what does that mean for Trump?

Tech billionaire Elon Musk wants to build a new party in the USA. His designated goal: the two -party system from Donald Trump’s Republicans on the one hand and the Democrats on the other. How far the richest man in the world gets with it is unclear. What he has already achieved: to take the feud with the US president to the extreme. At first, Trump did not respond to the announcement of his former confidant.

America Party-that is what the new party should be called, the Tesla boss announced on its platform X. Musk wrote that the new party would “give back their freedom” to the US citizens. He criticized: “When it comes to driving the country through waste and bribery in bankruptcy, we live in a one -party system, not in a democracy.”

Musk also shared a contribution in which possible program focal points are outlined. Including: reduction in the state debt and output discipline, fight for freedom of speech and deregulation. Documents on the America Party were already found on the website of the Federal Authority Federal Election Commission, which takes care of transparency in campaign financing.

Musk’s advance marks a preliminary climax of the feud between Trump and the tech billionaire. Nobody had expected this to be: Musk had supported Trump’s election campaign with more than $ 250 million and was commissioned with cost reductions in the government apparatus after the inauguration. The budget cuts and job cuts carried out by the committee dog dogs caused violent criticism and protests in some cases.

After the election, Musk was a close confidante Trump, who was at the cabinet table to be surprised and – with his little son on his shoulders – became the shadow of the president at many events in the White House.

But then a mud fight followed in early June, ignited in Trump’s plans strictly rejected by Musk in budgetary policy. The two covered with violent allegations on social media – everyone could read. For example, Musk wrote: “Without me, Trump would have lost the choice.”

The Tesla boss, who also has an electric car plant in Brandenburg, left open what role he wants to play in the announced new party. Should he actively contribute to politics, he could present himself directly as a kind of opponent of Trump.

Unlike in Germany, where coalitions from several parties form the federal government and there are many parties in the Bundestag, the currently ruling Republicans of Trump determine in the USA on the one hand and the Democrats on the other.

Other parties also exist, but in fact there is a two -party system. Smaller parties have little chance of greater political success – also because of the majority voting right, in which only the winner comes to the train and votes for other candidates. The question is how promising Musk’s plans are against this background. At the same time, one should not forget: the tech entrepreneur has a lot of money and can mobilize. Musk is the guy who likes to break up established radically. Example auto industry with Tesla.

The question is which American Musk could address with his new party. Will he harm Trump and take voters away from the Republicans? Could he even indirectly help the Democrats?

The TV broadcaster CNN showed a survey from 2024, according to which 58 percent of adult respondents agreed to the statement that a third party was needed.

The founder of the SpaceX space company cannot become president himself because he was born in South Africa. As the richest person in the world with an estimated assets of around $ 360 billion, he sees himself able to significantly influence the outcome of elections at different levels. Musk threatened weeks ago to support opponents for Congressmen who vote for the Trump Act.

In March, however, the borders of Musk’s political power became clear. He threw his weight in the election campaign for an important judge post in the state of Wisconsin – and the Republican he supported clearly lost.

Because of his hard right political views, Musk is very unpopular among voters of the democratic party. Due to the break with Trump, a large part of the political basis of the Republicans could also turn away from him. Both parties have voters who are on one side of Trump’s course on the right and on the other side of the Democrats too liberal. But Musk had positioned himself so clearly in recent years that it should be difficult for him to win the middle.

Most recently, Musk had again excited himself about the large tax and expenditure law signed by Trump on Friday, known as “One Big Beautiful Bill”. Among other things, he demanded far more powerful spending cuts and warned that the further increase in government debt will burden future generations.

Trump celebrated the decided law on independence day as an important domestic victory. Musk’s resistance to the law declares Trump with the elimination of electric car subsidies.

Musk had already announced that he would found a new party in the middle if the law was going through. On independence day, the tech billionaire had almost started a survey on X in contrast to Trump, in which he set the party foundation to vote. A good 65 percent spoke in this in around 1.25 million participants – no overwhelming value, since such surveys on Musk’s platform are often dominated by his followers. On Saturday, Musk then added: “You want a new political party and you should have it.”
