The BRICS countries have expressed “serious concerns” against Donald Trump’s tariffs. The US President immediately threatens to do additional punitive tariffs for all critics.

After the criticism of the BRICS countries of his trade policy, US President Donald Trump has announced additional punitive tariffs for all countries that approach the alliance. “Every country that allies with the anti-American politics of the BRICS (states) is occupied with an additional ten percentage. There will be no exceptions,” he wrote on Sunday (local time) in his online network Truth Social.

Trump also announced that the letters with which the US trading partners are to be informed about the tariffs to send them at noon (local time, 6 p.m. CEST). “I am pleased to be able to announce that the customs letters of the United States to different countries in the world from 12 p.m., (US East Coast period), will be sent on Monday, July 7th,” he said.

Trump had announced that it would send “twelve” letters. It was unclear which countries are affected. The tariffs should be between ten and 70 percent.

Donald Trump’s grace period for tariffs expires

Trump had imposed high customs for numerous states in early April and shortly afterwards reduced them to ten percent for most countries for a 90-day negotiation phase. The deadline for the EU expires on Wednesday, for numerous other countries on Tuesday. Brussels and Washington have not yet reached an agreement in the customs dispute.

The BRICS countries had criticized Trump’s trade policy in Brazil at a summit on Sunday. They expressed “serious concerns” against the increase in one -sided tariffs and other measures, “which distort trade and are incompatible with the rules of the world trade organization”.

In addition to the eponymous countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the group also includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates since 2023. The state of the state was founded to reduce the geopolitical dominance of the United States and Europe and to create a multipolar world order. The BRICS countries make up around half of the world’s population and 40 percent of global economic output.
