In order to strengthen new NATO brigades, Germany apparently encounters a gigantic tank job. This emerges from a report.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius allegedly wants to use the pocket and upgrade the Bundeswehr massively. At least this is reported by the economic news agency “Bloomberg” and relies on insider information.
In the report, there is talk of up to 1000 Leopard 2 fighting tanks and 2500 GTK boxer shooter tanks. Why the whole thing? The reason is to set up new NATO brigades, says “Bloomberg” insider.
NATO has asked Germany to provide up to seven additional fighting brigades within the next ten years. If the billion order is approved, the tanks and combat vehicles would better upgrade NATO, given the growing concern of the NATO countries about Russian aggression since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
Up to 25 billion euros for new Bundeswehr tanks
The total cost of the military mandate could be up to 25 billion euros, approved circles. Since the negotiations are still running, it is likely that this number will be corrected downwards.
The combat tanks of KDNS and Rheinmetall, the stems from Artec (which is also a joint venture between KDNS and Rheinmetall) are manufactured. The Ministry of Defense left a request from “Bloomberg” uncommented.
The order is still anything but fixed, writes “Bloomberg”: A final decision should be taken by the end of the year. If it goes through, the investments would only be booked in the next federal budget.
Pistorius also wants to strengthen the Bundeswehr with the recruitment law
If the armor order is approved, this is another big step on Pistorius’ gone to upgrade the Bundeswehr. On Friday, the media, the Minister of Defense, reported to recruit around 114,000 military service providers by the end of 2029.
Accordingly, he wants to bring the bill to the federal cabinet for the time being voluntary military service at the end of August.
According to the Federal Ministry of Defense, the law should come into force until January so that the new military service 2026 can start as quickly as possible. According to media reports, a return to compulsory military service is to be made possible, but are provided with conditions.
Accordingly, Pistorius can suggest the cabinet to return to military duty if the Bundeswehr’s personnel requirements are not covered or the security policy situation changes significantly. After a corresponding vote of the cabinet, the Bundestag could then re -enter the conscription with a simple majority.
