Ban bang and firecrackers? The majority of the Germans are for it

The Netherlands have just decided: a ban on firecrackers at the turn of the year. In this country, too, most of them would find that right – only one group is clear against it.

At the turn of the year 2024/2025, the Germans really let it rip off: on New Year’s Eve they chased rockets and firecrackers worth 195 million euros. The Association of Pyrotechnic Industry was delighted with a sales increase of ten percent compared to the previous year. Animal rights activists and environmental associations, on the other hand, were horrified. They have long been demanding a ban on firecrackers, as it was decided by the government in the Netherlands a few days ago. From the turn of the year 2026/2027, private individuals are no longer allowed to buy and ignite fireworks there.

Only young men are for a ban on firecrackers

59 percent of Germans are in favor of issuing such a firing ban in this country. This was the result of a Forsa survey on behalf of the star. 39 percent are against the prohibition of private fireworks. Two percent do not comment. At 67 percent, women are much more common for a firing ban than men, but they are also with a narrow majority (51 to 47 percent). Only in the group of younger men (18 to 29 years) are it a little different. Here 51 percent are against a ban and 48 percent for it. When considering the party preference, it is striking: Left-wing supporters most often speak out for an end to private bangs (86 percent), the voters of the AfD are the only group clearly against a ban (60 percent).

In addition to animal and nature conservation, violence on the New Year’s Days also played a role in the decision. Again and again there were attacks on police officers, firefighters and other rescue workers with fireworks. In Germany, the injuries also play a role in the discussion that the ignition of firecrackers always plays. However, the pyro lobby points out that in the event of death and serious injuries, there were often illegally imported or self-made fireworks. The Interior Ministers’ Conference had not been able to agree on a ban three weeks ago. In Germany, fireworks can be sold to private individuals on the three working days before the turn of the year and New Year’s Eve. It may only be ignited on December 31 and January 1.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa for the Stern and RTL Germany on July 3 and 4. Database: 1000 respondents. Statistical fault tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points. This means that the survey is representative.
