Tropen-Trump helps Trump. The situation in the morning

Donald Trump joins Jair Bolsonaro with tariffs, a controversial street renaming and a AI that recognizes burnout. That is important today.

Good morning, dear readers!

They are right-wing populists in spirit: US President Donald Trump and the former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. They both stage themselves as outsiders who take it with the evil establishment. Both have been voted out once, have a tense relationship with critical media, keep little of environmental protection and tendency to an authoritarian leadership style. No wonder that the Brazilian, who was in office from 2019 to 2022, quickly missed the nickname “Tropen-Trump”. Whether this is meant as a compliment or insult is in the eye of the viewer.

Donald Trump wants to help Jair Bolsonaro with his customs hammer

It is not surprising that Trump jumps to his side to his South American counterpart very quickly. Bolsonaro, who is on trial because of the allegation of the attempt of a coup d’état, is the victim of a “witch hunt” that “immediately!” As the Republican already wrote on Monday, the end must end.

In order to emphasize his words, the US President takes out his new favorite toy: tariffs.

In a letter to the left -wing Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he announced that he would prove the country with tariffs of 50 percent from August 1st. Reason? Because the local judiciary is going against his crumgeon because there is an alleged “censorship” of US online platforms in the country and anyway because Brazil was not good at the United States at all.

The fact that Trump works for the Brazilian right wing could also have another reason: On January 1, 2023, Bolsonaro supporters had stormed the congress, the president’s office and the Supreme Court in the capital Brasilia and caused serious devastation. The same had happened in Washington DC a good two years earlier, as Trumplists and Maga supporters, starked by the Trump election loser, fell over the US Congress. In the end, the Republican got away with it-maybe he wants the same for the “tropical trump”. He is planning his comeback in the presidential election next year. However, Bolsonaro has banned political house because it is blocked by 2030 due to a conviction in another procedure. If he is convicted in the coup process, he threatens up to 40 years in prison.

Violence in Brazil
Jair Bolsonaro is silent. Like so much, he looked back on Donald Trump’s strategy

Can Trump’s customs hammer help him out of her go? In any case, President Lula does not want to put up with it – and threatens countermeasures. The outcome remains open.

What was wrong in Corona pandemic, Mr. Lauterbach?

I don’t know how you are doing, dear readers, but for me the Corona pandemic has been felt forever. It is only a few years. And Corona hasn’t disappeared either. Occasionally, passengers with FFP2 masks on bus and train remind us of it. Here in Japan you can find masked fellow human beings more often. But long before Corona, wearing mouth protection was among the Japanese en Vogue and is still – out of consideration for others, when you are tapped.

However, mask obligation was a stimulus topic for many people during Corona pandemic, also in Germany. Further measures, arranged by the federal and state governments, ensured republic -wide displeasure and demos. Today the Bundestag wants to use a so-called Enquete Commission. It should clarify what was going politically wrong at the time – and which teachings can be drawn for future emergencies. A man who stood in the corona era was ex-health minister Karl Lauterbach. The SPDler talks to our “5-minute talk” podcast star-Piece boss Veit Medick on the meaning and purpose of the body -and explains what in his view politicians made the handling of pandemic wrong:

No Mo (h) Re Mohrenstrasse

We have all led them before, the discussion about terms and words that “at that time” were still completely fine and which one is no longer allowed to say today! “. The N-word or the Z-word are examples of this. Fortunately, the fact that such names of humans are actually hurtful and discriminatory has arrived in the minds of most.

But the distance from such terms from public space often remains a tough process. A dispute over a street name ended in Berlin: the controversial renaming of Mohrenstrasse in Berlin through the Mitte district can take place. The Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court confirmed a corresponding decision by the Berlin Administrative Court. The judgment is therefore final.

Residents had sued the renaming. They argued that the naming for the street 300 years ago was not meant racist, but appreciatively. Many historical street names have several facets, but are part of the city’s history and they have to be explained.

However, the administrative court dismissed the complaints. However, the decision was initially not final. A resident requested an appeal before the OVG – unsuccessful.

U-Bahnhof Mohrenstrasse in Berlin

Berlin
U-Bahnhof Mohrenstrasse should be called Glinkastraße-there is also criticism of the new namesake

The “Mohrenstraße”, which was led by the Greens, had long been a thorn in the side of the “Mohrenstraße”. The term “Mohr” is discriminatory and racist and a shame of the reputation of Berlin. The selected new name is Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße. AMO, born around 1703 in today’s Ghana, was deported to Germany as a child. He was the first known philosopher and legal scientist of African origin in Germany. Naming a street after him certainly honors much more than a term from the past that has long been outdated.

Something positive

If the pressure in the workplace becomes too strong, this can affect mental health. And more and more workers in Germany. Termind pressure, long to-do lists, fear of failure, uncertainties and negative colleagues can make mentally ill and end in burnout. A start-up in Lausanne, Switzerland, has now developed an artificial intelligence to prevent this. As the Swiss radio reports, the AI should use voices analyzes to show whether someone is exposed to the risk of mental illness or burnout. For this purpose, the flow of speech, the speech and tonality are analyzed. The software’s hit rate is over 90 percent. And not only that: she can also recognize other diseases such as Parkinson’s very reliably. Of course, the AI is not a substitute for professional therapy. It should help with early detection so that those affected get support at an early stage. This can also save lives, especially with mental suffering and depression.
