Federal Constitutional Court: Again to majorities before the judge’s election

Approximize majorities before the judge’s election

On Friday, the Bundestag is scheduled to decide on three posts at the highest German court. Could AfD vote become decisive? And does an SPD candidate get the necessary support?

Before the election of judges for the Federal Constitutional Court, the Union wrestles for unity. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) announced on a trip to Rome that he would take part in the Union faction meeting on Friday morning, “which we have to discuss this question again”. There is resistance in the Union against a candidate nominated by the SPD. The majorities seem unsafe.

Merz wants to talk to Spahn

On Thursday evening, Merz wanted to come together with parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn (CDU). “We will talk about it again and we will also try to get a common solution,” he announced. The parliamentary group meeting is scheduled for 8:00 a.m., the plenary session with the election of the judges begins at 9:00 a.m.

Three judges should be re -elected. The Union proposes the previous judge at the Federal Labor Court, Günter Spinner. The SPD has nominated the Jura professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf and Ann-Katrin Kaufhold.

Resistance to an SPD candidate

There are reservations about Brosius-Gersdorf in the CDU/CSU. Among other things, it is about their positive attitude to an obligation to vaccinate during Corona pandemic, on the other hand, about their from the perspective of some MPs to liberal attitude towards abortions.

It is also possible that the CDU/CSU could be dependent on the AfD votes for the choice of its candidate. The Union faction has so far rejected conversations with the left. The AfD parliamentary group leads to its MPs the election of Spinner and advises against the election of the two SPD candidates. If the left is not right for him, AfD votes could be decisive.

Left-wing politician complains of “hunt”

Left-wing MP Clara Bünger told the German Press Agency that the Union had no talks with the left. Instead, she donated chaos against Brosius-Gersdorf with a “hunt”. “The ghosts she called, she won’t get rid of her anymore,” said Bünger. The Union could have organized democratic majorities, but instead accept that spinners are chosen with votes from the AfD.

At a faction meeting on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m., the left will discuss its position and its possible coordination behavior. “It is a serious matter for us,” said Bünger.

Haßelmann warns of random majorities

Green parliamentary group leader Britta Haßelmann warned against ran in votes from the AfD in the election of judges. “I see the Bundestag as a duty to ensure a clear two -thirds majority without the AfD for the occupation of the highest court,” she told the dpa. “Union and the SPD have set up the choice of two candidates in the Bundestag and are now the responsibility to secure a democratic majority.”

Haßelmann warned of “random majorities” and in particular made the Union and SPD duty. “But the left also has to see that.” The Greens would promote the support of all three election proposals.

CSU state group leader advertises SPD candidate

The head of the CSU MPs in the Bundestag, Alexander Hoffmann, called on to support Brosius-Gersdorf. “Ms. Brosius-Gersdorf is not a candidate of the Union, but a respectable candidate of the SPD-and certainly not a radical leftist activist,” he told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. Their choice is “not an attack on the protection of unborn life”. In various legal writings, she had made it clear that the fundamental right to life does not apply only from birth, but was already entitled to the embryo.
