Donald Trump sends the next customs letter: to neighbor Canada, an important trading partner. The letter is also about a drug.
US President Donald Trump announces high tariffs against the neighboring country Canada. “From August 1st, we will raise tariffs of 35 percent to Canadian products that are delivered to the United States,” said Trump in a letter to Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, whom he published on Thursday (local time) in his online service Truth Social.
The tariffs would add to the already raised tariffs for certain sectors, including steel and aluminum and the automotive industry, Trump explained. The products are among the most important export goods in Canada in the USA.
It is the youngest of more than 20 such customs letters that Trump has sent since Monday. In the letter, the Republican also brought the fentanyl crisis into play.
That is the current state of the US tariff (start 1st August):
Japan | 25 percent |
South Korea | 25 percent |
Malaysia | 25 percent |
Kazakhstan | 25 percent |
South Africa | 30 percent |
Laos | 40 percent |
Myanmar | 40 percent |
Tunisia | 25 percent |
Bosnia and Herzegovina | 30 percent |
Indonesia | 32 percent |
Bangladesh | 35 percent |
Serbia | 35 percent |
Cambodia | 36 percent |
Thailand | 36 percent |
Libya | 30 percent |
Iraq | 30 percent |
Algeria | 30 percent |
Vltava | 25 percent |
Philippines | 20 percent |
Brunei | 25 percent |
Sri Lanka | 30 percent |
Brazil | 50 percent |
Canada | 35 percent |
Trump criticized that Canada had not managed to stop the synthetic drug’s influx into the United States. Instead, Kanada-instead of working with the USA-rejected the customs dispute with its own customs duties to an earlier customs announcement from the United States.
Fentanyl is a synthetic drug that makes it quickly and strongly dependent. It has led to a major drug problem in the United States. Criminal syndicates mainly supply drugs with drugs from Mexico. US President Trump also accuses Canada and China of being responsible for the fentanyl crisis.
Trump imposes tariffs against Canada: trade talks canceled
At the end of June, Trump had already announced trade talks with Canada. As the reason, Trump had mentioned a Canada introduction of a digital tax to business in American companies. The United States is by far the most important trading partner for Canada.
The US President had sparked a global trade conflict in early April. Trump initially announced high imports for numerous countries, but lowered them to a base rate of ten percent after violent reactions on the financial markets. At the same time, Trump announced a 90-day “break” for negotiations that should actually run out on Wednesday. The President extended this deadline on Monday until August 1st. In the previous days, the Republican had already made numerous letters to other countries public. So far, the EU has not been among them.
