Does black and red with a burdened mood go into your first parliamentary summer break? Between the Union and the SPD, there is trouble about the election of a candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court.
In the struggle for the re-occupation of three judges’ positions at the Federal Constitutional Court, the Union from the coalition partner SPD requires the dismissal of the election planned today from their candidate Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf from the agenda of the Bundestag. Otherwise, the Union will contain the Brosius-Gersdorf, which was particularly controversial in the CDU/CSU, the German press agency received a special meeting of the Union faction before planned elections.
In the Union faction it was said that discussions with the SPD would now be accepted from the agenda of the SPD about the election of Brosius-Gersdorf.
Majorities were uncertain the day before the votes
In the Union there is resistance to the SPD candidate, including reference to her statements on abortion law. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had clearly spoken out for her choice in the middle of the week, but the resentment in the ranks of the Union faction over Brosius-Gersdorf still grew.
A two -thirds majority of the members of the Bundestag participating in the vote are used to choose the new judges at the Federal Constitutional Court. In addition to the Union and SPD deputies, voices of Greens, Left or AfD are also necessary.
Three elections are actually planned for Friday. The Union sends the previous judge at the Federal Labor Court, Günter Spinner. In addition to Brosius-Gersdorf, the SPD has nominated the Jura professor Ann-Katrin Kaufhold.
Union faction tips promoted approval
The left had asked for talks with the Union and in the long run the opportunity to make suggestions for constitutional judges themselves. According to the previous agreement in the Bundestag, the Union, SPD and Green judge candidates can propose.
Representatives of the Union faction management had recruited in the past few days to choose Brosius-Gersdorf despite resistance in their own ranks. For example, the chairman of the CSU MPs in the Bundestag, Alexander Hoffmann, told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”: “Ms. Brosius-Gersdorf is not a candidate for the Union, but a respectable candidate of the SPD-and certainly not a left-wing radical activist.”
