The arrest of Machmud Chalil in March after university protests against the Gaza War caused a sensation. After his release, he now demands compensation – or an excuse.
The pro-Palestinian activist Machmud Chalil, which was released after 104 days in deportation, demands $ 20 million compensation from the US government. He demands this sum for the damage caused by the “politically motivated arrest”, the non -governmental organization Center for Constitutional Rights announced that legally supports him.
Instead of a payment, Chalil also accepted an official debt of the government of President Donald Trump and a departure from the “unconstitutional policy” against participants in the university protests against the Gaza War.
Claim rejected as “absurd”
Chalil had participated in propalestinic protests in connection with Israel’s approach in the Gaza War at the renowned Columbia University in Manhattan. As a speaker at the demos, he played a prominent role. The US government wants to deport him and accuses him of having distributed leaflets on the university site with the logo of the Islamist Hamas.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Ministry of Homeland, rejected Chalil’s demand for compensation as “absurd”. Chalil and other students from abroad had called for violence with the protests on campus, glorified and supported terrorists, molested and damaged Jewish students, quoted the judicial portal “Courthouse News” and the “Washington Post” from their statement. The Trump government acted with the arrests in the context of its legal and constitutional powers.
CHALIL: “First step to request responsibility”
Chalil’s case has been causing a sensation in the United States for months. It was the first publicly known arrest of a propalestinian activist during the term of the tenure of US President Donald Trump-more have now been added. In June, a federal judge in the state of New Jersey ordered that Chalil had to be released from the deportation for deposit, while the procedure against him continues.
Chalil had established Louisiana in the State State in the State of Jena. According to his lawyers, he has a GreenCard that grants him a permanent right of residence in the United States. His wife is a US citizen – the child was born in April when he was in custody.
