The Kurdish Workers’ Party PKK, classified as a terrorist organization, gives up its armed fight – at least officially. The first weapons are made unusable.
Fighters of the Kurdistan workers’ party (PKK) have held a ceremony to remove their weapons in the north of Iraq. 30 PKK fighters, including four commanders, burned their weapons on Friday, as a reporter from the AFP news agency observed. The short ceremony was held in a cave near Suleimanija in the autonomous Kurdistan region in Iraq.
PKK resolution decided
The region serves as a retreat for fighters of the PKK banned by Turkey as a terrorist organization. A few hours before the weapon laying, the Kurdish Peschmerga defended two drones in Northern Iraq. One of the drones was shot down at Suleimanija late Thursday evening (local time), the second around three hours later in the province of Kurki, said a Peschmerga spokesman.
The PKK had announced its resolution on May 12, at the request of its detained boss Abdullah Öcalan, and declared its decades -long armed struggle for the rights of the Kurds. The entire disarmament process is expected to take several months.
