Russia closes Poland’s consulate general in Kaliningrad

Warsaw blames Moscow’s secret services for a major fire in a shopping center. First a Russian consulate general was closed in Poland. Now there is an answer.

At Moscow’s order, Poland must close his Consulate General in the neighboring Russian Baltic Sea region of Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg). Russia is thus reacting to the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Krakow. Warsaw decided to take the step in May after Moscow’s secret services were held responsible for a major fire in a shopping center. The Polish representation must stop working by August 29, the Foreign Ministry said in Moscow.

Poland had ordered the closure of the Russian representation in Krakow on June 30th. Russia accused Poland of “enemy acts” and a thought -out pretext to cease the work of the Moscow authorities.

At the major fire on May 12, 2024 in the Warsaw shop “Marywilska 44”, around 1,400 shops and service facilities were destroyed. Nobody was injured. The investigation showed that the fire had broken out in several places. Poland Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski wrote on X of proving that the Russian services had carried out a reprehensible sabotage act against the shopping center in Marywilska-Straße in Warsaw.
