A radical renovation is in the US State Department: According to an internal letter, layoffs are planned in the four-digit range. There is criticism of Trump and Rubio.
The US government has initiated its controversial mass layoffs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On Friday, the discharge of more than 1350 employees based in the United States was to begin, according to an internal letter from the Ministry in which the Reuters news agency received an insight. According to this, 1107 officials of the general administrative service and 246 diplomats are affected.
The ministry is tightening the internal processes to concentrate on diplomatic priorities, it said. HR reduction was carefully tailored to areas outside of the core tasks, where there are double or superfluous areas as well as those with considerable efficiency potential.
Democratic Senator Tim Kaine sharply criticized the decision. “President (Donald) Trump and Foreign Minister (Marco) Rubio make America even more insecure,” said Kaine. This is one of the “most ridiculous decisions” that can be made. At a time when China expands its diplomatic influence worldwide, Russia continues its brutal attack on a sovereign country and the Middle East from one crisis into the next sliding.
Last week, more than 130 retired diplomats and other former high US officials criticized the planned renovation in an open letter.
Storage of the State Department is probably reduced by around 3000 employees
Overall, the workforce, including voluntary departures, is to be reduced by around 3,000 out of 18,000 employees in the USA. The layoffs are part of a far-reaching renovation that Trump ordered in February to align US foreign policy on its “America First” agenda.
The US President has also repeatedly announced the fight for the “deep state” (“deep state”) he describes. He accuses the civil servants to undermine his policy as a kind of state in the state. In April, Rubio said that the ministry was “bloated and bureaucratic” in its current form.
The implementation of the plans had been delayed due to legal challenge. A judgment of the US Court of Justice on Tuesday cleared the way to reduce personnel.
