The government in Damascus has promised a “Syria for everyone”. The recurring violence between denominational groups shows that the way there is far. There are new fights in the south.
Despite the efforts of more stability in renewed unrest, dozens of people have died in Syria. In the southern province of Suwaida, at least 89 people were killed in armed groups, as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced. Among them are 50 members of the Drusian minority, 18 Bedouins and 14 government soldiers. Dozens of people were also injured, some of them were life -threatening. There are also children among the victims.
The Syrian Ministry of the Interior initially reported more than 30 fatalities and around 100 injuries in several communities. The government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa has taken control in Damascus since the fall of ruler Bashar al-Assad around half a year ago. It tries to produce stability in the country where a civil war raged for more than ten years.
The clashes from the night continued during the day. It was “not an immediate end in sight,” said the observation site. From London, this pursues the conflict in Syria with a network of activists.
Unrest since robbery on Drusian young people
According to the observation site, the unrest began a few days ago by robbery on a drusian youth on the expressway between Damascus and Suwaida. Relatives of local trunks therefore built a checkpoint where they are said to have stopped the young man, brutally beat and robbed. Thereupon Drusian fighter had kidnapped Bedouins, which finally led to violence in the area.
The Ministry of Defense sent military units to end violence. The troops fought on the side of the Bedouins, said the observation site, which reported mortar fire and drone attacks.
The aim of the military operation is to protect “civilians after 48 hours of bloodshed”, the Ministry said. All efforts will be undertaken to disarm “forbidden groups” and restore state authority. “The restoration of security and stability in Suwaida is a common responsibility between the state and its citizens.” They work with the Druze leaders and the governor of Suwaida to calm the situation.
Israel’s military attacks tanks in the region
The fights also fueled the conflict with the neighboring Israel. Israel’s military claimed several tanks in the region. The combat vehicles had moved towards the city of Suwaida, the attack should prevent this, the Israeli military later said. The presence of such weapon systems in southern Syria can “represent a threat to the state of Israel,” it said.
It was initially unclear whether Israel’s attack was directly related to the outbreak of new violence in the area. Israel attacks more destinations in the neighboring country and had already intervened after the fatal violence between Sunni militias and Drusian fighters at the end of April – according to their own statements to support the Drusen in Syria.
The members of this religious minority live alongside Syria, especially in Israel, Jordan and Lebanon. In Israel, many druses serve voluntarily in the army – the Jewish state sees it as an ally.
New government had promised “Syria for everyone”
Syria is also divided after Assad’s fall in December and far from reconciling its ethnic groups and permanent stability. The different religious traditions of Sunni Muslims, Alawites, Drusen and Yazidis shape the tensions in the country.
The new government has promised the country with around 23 million inhabitants a “Syria for everyone”. The protection of minorities is also critically pursued internationally. Since the new government started, however, there have been repeatedly denominational violence with hundreds of dead, which continues to stir up fears.
Three weeks ago, a previously unknown group of jihadists had claimed a suicide attack on a church in Damascus, in which at least 25 people were killed and more than 60 more injured. The Saraja Ansar al-Sunna group threatened to attack further attacks.
The foreign policy spokeswoman for the left faction, Cansu Özdemir, demanded that in view of the new violence there should be no deportations to Syria. Syria has been one of the most important countries of origin of people who are looking for protection in Germany for years.
