Trump: “I haven’t finished yet with Putin”

Again and again the US President had emphasized his good relationship with his Russian counterpart in the past. Now he is personally disappointed by Putin.

U.S. President Donald Trump personally handed over to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin after his deadline against Russia to terminate the Ukraine War. “I am disappointed with him. I haven’t finished with him yet, but I’m disappointed with him,” Trump told the BBC in a 20-minute telephone interview.

He had already thought four times that he had agreed with Putin, “and then you come home and see that he just attacked a nursing home or something in Kiev”. When asked whether he would trust Putin, Trump replied: “I don’t trust anyone to be honest.”

Trump had set a deadline on Monday at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House. If there was no deal in the efforts to end the Russian war against Ukraine within 50 days, the United States would raise high tariffs against Russia’s trading partner. Trump had previously been able to end the war with negotiations – and made a phone call to Putin several times.

NATO no longer “obsolete”

In the BBC interview, Trump also spoke about NATO, which he once referred to as “obsolete”. The opposite is now the case, said the US President, since the alliance “pays his own invoices”. Under the impression of Russia’s war against Ukraine and at the urging of Trump, the NATO countries had agreed at a summit in June to invest five percent of gross domestic product in defense and security annually at the latest from 2035. So far, the goal was two percent.
