“We will only respond to shelling” – with this approach, the Syrian government troops try to control the location in the south. In Suwaida the rifle fire becomes less.
After violence in southern Syria with dozens of dead, the government in Damascus announced a ceasefire. A “complete ceasefire after an agreement with the dignitaries” in Suwaida, Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Kasra said. “We will only respond to fire and take care of attacks by banned groups,” he said, according to the state news agency Sana. This applies to “all units” of the Syrian government troops.
The troops have moved up in the south after violence between members of the Drusian minority and Sunni Bedouin clans had occurred since Sunday. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 100 people were killed and around 200 others were injured, including children.
Local residents reported to the German Press Agency that the situation was “comparatively quiet” after the government troops have moved in. Previously, residents had reported explosions and shots. The government troops would respectfully deal with the residents, but would continue to pursue fighters. These had withdrawn from the city with vehicles in the east and southern direction.
