The US President and the California government have been fighting for the use of the National Guard in Los Angeles for weeks. Now the Pentagon announces the withdrawal of half of the soldiers.
After a week-long use of the national guard in the state of California, the US Department of Defense wants to deploy 2,000 and thus half of the soldiers used there. The Pentagon justified the decision that thanks to the use of the soldiers, “lawlessness” in Los Angeles had decreased. In June, the soldiers were sent by US President Donald Trump against the will by California Governor Gavin Newsom to stop protests against abusing agencies from the immigration authority ICE.
This means that 2,000 soldiers from the National Guard and 700 marine fans of the regular armed forces remain in the city. Newsom and the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, had sharply criticized the posting of the soldiers. The case also went to court.
After announcing the partial deduction of the National Guard, Bass spoke of a “big victory”. The residents of Los Angeles would have held together on this matter and clearly spoke out against the mission.
Governor Newsom called for a complete deduction of the national guard. Trump and the Pentagon should end “this theater” and send all soldiers home immediately, the Democrat wrote on the X.
In the United States, states normally have control over the national guard. If there is a war or national emergencies, the US President can take command. The National Guard is a military reserve unit and part of the US armed forces. For example, it can be used for natural disasters, unrest or emergencies inside.
