The Ukraine crisis dominates the Munich Security Conference. On Saturday, the new Chancellor will comment on this – and on other foreign policy issues.
On the second day of the Munich Security Conference, Chancellor Olaf Scholz will present his foreign policy agenda in a speech.
In addition, US Vice President Kamala Harris, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the world’s most important meeting of experts on security policy. The central issue will continue to be the crisis surrounding the massive Russian troop deployment on the border with Ukraine. The foreign ministers of the leading democratic economic powers also want to discuss this on the fringes of the event. Germany chairs this Group of Seven (G7), which also includes the USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Japan.
No representative of Russia present
In the West, there are fears that the Kremlin is considering an invasion of its neighboring country and that the conflict could even spread to include NATO countries. However, it is also considered possible that fears are only being stirred up in order to persuade the NATO states to make concessions on the demands for new security guarantees. Russia denies attack plans.
Talks with representatives of Russia are not on the agenda at the security conference. For the first time since 1991, the country is not represented by an official delegation in Munich.
Around 30 heads of state and government and around 80 ministers are taking part in the conference in Munich, which is taking place under strict corona conditions. For the new federal government of SPD, Greens and FDP it is the first opportunity to present their foreign policy comprehensively. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and Development Minister Svenja Schulze had already appeared in Munich on Friday.
