Women’s pensions in the east 357 euros higher than in the west

In the former GDR, many women worked in full -time jobs, made possible by extensive state childcare. The result: women in the east are better placed in pension than in the west.

Women still receive less than 1,000 euros a month in the West German federal states. In the east, on the other hand, there was no federal state in 2023 in which a woman’s average pension was lower than 1,100 euros. On average, a pensioner in the east receives 1,218 euros, 357 euros more than in the west. This has calculated the forecast institute and the overall association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV).

The best thing to do nationwide is women in Potsdam, where the average monthly pension was 1,314 euros. That was almost twice as much as in the Rhineland-Palatinate Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm, the nationwide in the bottom: On average, women got an average of 668 euros a month.

Women in the west have long breaks at work due to the family

This is due to the great gradient due to the fact that many pensioners in the old federal states have been family -related housewives in recent years and often worked part -time after the children. “This means that women pay less in pension funds and retirement provision and then be financially worse than men in old age,” said Moritz Schumann, deputy general manager of the GDV. Accordingly, men in the old countries get an average of two thirds higher pension.

In the east, on the other hand, women’s employment has always been higher, an inheritance of past GDR times. In men, on the other hand, the west-east gap in the pensions is only minimal: according to the evaluation, it was 1,430 euros in the west and 1,416 euros in the east.

Men’s pensions in NRW are highest

However, the men’s pensions are not too high in some places: the district of Waldshut in the southern Black Forest is 1st201 in this regard. That was less than the average women’s pensions in Brandenburg, Saxony or Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Nationwide, male pensioners are in the Ruhrpott, especially in the Bottrop district with an average of 1,686 euros a month.
