Has Donald Trump calculated again with the 50-day period for an armistice in Ukraine? Moscow will trick again, says political scientist Christian Mölling.
With his ultimatum to Russia for an armistice in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump has maneuvered himself in a terminal. Christian Mölling from the Brussels Thinktank “European Policy Center” is convinced of this.
“Basically, the ultimatum is a trap for Donald Trump,” said the security expert in star– “The Location -International”. If the US President could “run through the arena again at the nose ring at the nose ring”, this would be a great encouragement for the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This is how Moscow reacts to the deadline
On Monday, Trump announced a change of strategy in his Russia policy in the presence of NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte: he set Putin a period of 50 days to get an agreement with Ukraine. Otherwise, Trump threatened punitive tariffs of 100 percent on imports of countries that are still buying from Russia, so -called secondary tariffs. Among other things, India and China would be affected.
Moscow officially reacted calmly to the threat of the American president. Former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev spoke of a “theatrical ultimatum”. Even after the announcement, Russia continued its drone and rocket attacks on Ukraine.
“At the moment it doesn’t look like Russia is somehow impressed,” says Christian Mölling. If Moscow had the impression that further military successes can be achieved in Ukraine by the end of the year or early next year, the Russian government is “totally irrelevant”, said the expert.
Putin will make Trump a bogus offer
Mölling estimates that the Russian government will react with a trick. “I think the Kremlin will make an offer on a rhetorical level that Trump will allow it to say: I have achieved something.” 50 days are enough time so that the public would forget the actual conditions of the ultimatum again.
However, the ultimatum would only achieve a real effect if it had real consequences after the end. Mölling does not believe that Trump actually implements his threat in the end. To do this, the United States would have to put a lot more resources in the Ukraine secretary and be ready to “initiate a policy towards Russia that is more intense than that of the bidges,” says the political scientist. “The American President does not act at this point in time.”
