Germany wants to buy the US air defense systems to pass them on to Ukraine. But there are still details to clarify.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has shown confidently that an agreement with the United States can soon be reached by the delivery of patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. Defense ministers would negotiate the technical details during these hours, the CDU leader said in the afternoon during his visit to Great Britain. “They also have to be transported that have to be built up. This is not a question of hours. That is a question of days, maybe weeks.” But the negotiations are “very concrete”.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had not yet reached an agreement on Monday when he visited Washington. It was originally planned to buy two patriot systems for about one billion euros each in the United States and to bring them directly to Ukraine. However, since they are not immediately available, the Bundeswehr should now hand over two of their still nine patriots to Ukraine and later get replacement from the USA.
