Death of a 26-year-old: US Ministry only wants one day in prison for police officers

Breonna Taylor’s death triggered protests against police violence. A police officer involved was guilty, the US government is committed to a mild punishment.

In a sensational case of police violence in the United States, the Ministry of Justice has called for a prison sentence of only one day for a police officer involved and convicted. This emerges from an application from the Ministry of Justice. Former police officer Brett H. was guilty after the death of African American Breonna Taylor for violations of Taylor’s civil rights in November 2024.

The application of the Ministry of Justice is considered unusual and is seen as a political change of course after the previous US government tried to proceed more consistently against police violence. The sentence that was appointed by US President Donald Trump during the first term of office is to be imposed by a judge at the beginning of the next week, the Washington Post reports. In the event of the highest sentence, the policeman threatens lifelong imprisonment.

Breonna Taylor became a symbol of the Black Lives Matter Movement

The then police officer fired ten balls through the window and the door of the 26-year-old black emergency assistant Taylor in March 2020. Although none of the balls hit Taylor, H. applied excessive violence in the deployment, found a jury.

According to the previous investigations, a police officer, equipped with a search command, entered Taylor’s apartment at night when they received no answer to their knocks. In the apartment, Taylor’s friend is said to have shot first and injured one of the officials.

The friend later stated that he had considered the police officers to be burglars. The officials returned the fire and, according to official information, met the unarmed Breonna Taylor at least five times. According to US media reports, they were looking for Taylor’s ex-boyfriend who was not present.

Similar to that of George Floyd, the name of the 26-year-old black emergency assistant became a symbol of movement against racism and police violence. Expernation and protests had ensured that nobody was held responsible in connection with Taylor’s death.
