On the anniversary of the attack on Hitler, the focus is on those directly involved. However, the Minister of Culture continues to focus.
On the anniversary of the attempted coup of 20 July 1944, Minister of Culture Wolfram Weimer recognized the role of members of the resistance fighter and focused on silent civil courage. “Anyone who talks about resistance should not only speak of the assassins. Her families also show courage – and often paid a high price,” he writes in an explanation on the 81st anniversary of the attack on Adolf Hitler.
“Relatives who hid letters between files. Women who were in prisons. Weimer writes of a “whisper against the roar of the totalitarian”. “Too quiet for monuments, but loud enough to shape our idea of freedom to this day.”
With a view to the present, he warns of a misunderstanding: “Too often, we confuse free mutuality with heroism and civil courage with volume.” But attitude also thrives in secret. “When people look where others look away. If they choose to defend their values, even if it gets uncomfortable.”
On July 20, 1944, Wehrmacht officers around Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg tried in vain to kill Hitler with a bomb, to overthrow National Socialist rule and end the Second World War. After the failure, around 200 participants were killed or driven into suicide.
On the National Memorial Day on the occasion of the anniversary, a ceremony is planned in Berlin in the former SPITZENERPATE. Representatives of the Federal Government, Bundestag, Federal Council, Constitutional Court and the State of Berlin resigned wreaths there.
