The number of fatal bathing accidents is increasing. The left therefore calls for the introduction of mandatory swimming lessons at primary schools and a “swimming pool euro” for children.
In view of the increasing number of bathing deaths, the left -wing mandatory swimming lessons at primary schools are demanding. This emerges from an action plan that the chairman Jan van Aken wants to present on Monday star is present.
“Children no longer learn to swim; accidents are increasing,” it says. The number of fatal bathing accidents in Germany has increased continuously in recent years: “This is a disaster with an announcement.”
The left therefore demands that swimming lessons at every primary school must be possible: “For this we need enough water times, teacher staff and, above all, functioning baths in a accessible proximity to the place of residence.”
More and more bath deaths
Other demands of the plan include an investment program in swimming pools of one billion euros a year for the next few years, more staff in baths and the introduction of a “swimming pool euro” for children and adolescents. “Swimming must not depend on the parents’ wallet,” says the plan. Admission to public swimming pools must be “everywhere and permanently” for all children and adolescents. “An admission price of one euro is affordable for most people.” If this is not possible, free entry must be possible, at least for children.
The German life rescue company recorded 411 fatal bathing accidents for 2024, 31 more than in the previous year. Most accidents of this kind happened outside of guarded bathing areas on lakes and in rivers. According to DLRG, the closure of many swimming pools increases the risk.
So many bathrooms close each year
According to the DLRG, 70 to 80 swimming pools conclude in Germany. The reason is often that the municipalities can no longer afford financing. The lack of staff is also becoming increasingly a problem.
Left boss: “Swimming is a fundamental right”
“If children no longer learn to swim because the next bath is tight, something is going wrong in this country,” said left-wing boss Jan van Aken star. “Swimming is not a hobby – it is vital. And a damn fundamental right.”
The provision and maintenance of swimming pools must therefore be “a mandatory task of the state is not a voluntary freestyle”.
