The sociologist and generational researcher Klaus Hurrelmann spoke out for a social mandatory service for seniors “at the end of their working life”. “To expect the boys to defend the country alone in an emergency is not fair,” said the 81-year-old in an interview with the “Spiegel”. Rather, social tasks such as strengthening defense ability should be carried by all generations.

Alternatively, it is conceivable to keep the age flexible for the pension, the sociology professor said: “If you are fit, you could work longer. With 65 – or often enough at 63 – people are suddenly only private and vacation people. What kind of concept?” Overall, the company had to be careful not to get into an imbalance. “Young people wear the pension system, although it is not clear whether and how much they will have later.

Social compulsory year should relieve the young generation – and increase defense ability

Many young people currently suffered from the political, social and personal crises, said Hurrelmann. “There is a fainting, a feeling of overwhelming.” Various studies showed a high degree of subjectively perceived stress, stress, fear and an increase in mental disorders. “Being young is very exhausting today,” said the 81-year-old. “Before corona apandemia, the rule of thumb was: about ten percent of young people are mentally polluted that they need therapeutic help. The proportion has doubled.”

The generational researcher sees part of the responsibility in the upbringing: “Many parents have packed their children too much in cotton wool and want to protect against all dangers.” At the same time, some parents themselves are overwhelmed by the current events. He estimates that a third is “exhausted and on the edge of their possibilities”. Klaus Hurrelmann is a professor of public health and education at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. He was responsible for the renowned Shell youth study for many years.
