Survey: Majority against the withdrawal of Brosius-Gersdorf

How can the conflict over the SPD candidate for the constitutional court be resolved? Brosius-Gersdorf suggest leading Union politicians. This not only encounters resistance in the SPD.

According to a survey, a majority of Germans are against the fact that the law professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf withdraws her candidacy for the Federal Constitutional Court because of the concerns in the Union faction. In the Forsa survey for the “star”, 57 percent of those surveyed refused to take such a step. Almost every fourth – 24 percent – believed that the candidate nominated by the SPD should voluntarily do without resistance in the Union. 19 percent did not comment.

On July 11, the election of two new judges and a judge for the Federal Constitutional Court was discontinued at short notice from the agenda of the Bundestag, because in the Union faction, the SPD candidate was increasingly expressed. The fraction management, which had previously spoken out for the choice of the lawyer, was no longer able to guarantee the support agreed with the SPD. How the conflict can be solved is open. The SPD holds onto her candidate. Leading Union politicians, on the other hand, suggest the waiver of her candidacy.

Surprisingly, among the 1,000 respondents, the vote of the voters of the CDU and CSU also fails: According to the Forsa survey, only 23 percent are that Brosius-Gersdorf withdraws because of the resistance in the Union. 59 percent reject this.

A similar picture is evident among the supporters of other parties: the voters of SPD (82 percent), Greens (84 percent) and left (74 percent) are also majority against a withdrawal from Brosius-Gersdorf. On the other hand, 55 percent of the AfD supporters advocate a waiver, 28 percent are against it.

The data was collected by Forsa for the “Stern” and RTL Germany on July 17th and 18th.
