Wolodymyr Selenskyj proposed Russia to record direct talks again this week. Russia is ready, but dampens the expectations.
According to the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, representatives of Russia and Ukraine want to have direct talks again on Wednesday. The Ukrainian security head Rustem Umerow informed him about the preparations for the meeting planned in Turkey, Selenskyj said on Monday evening in his daily video message. Both sides had previously held direct talks in Istanbul in May and June, but progress in the direction of a ceasefire were not achieved at the meetings.
Selenskyj rejects Russia’s maximum claims
Selenskyj had proposed new direct talks with Russia this week at the weekend. Russia had basically agreed on such a meeting on Monday, but the hopes for a breakthrough were steamed at the same time. The positions on both sides are “diametrically” opposed, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow.
The only concrete result of the previous two negotiations was a prisoner exchange between the two sides. Moscow demands from the government in Kiev to resign all four of Russia for annexed Ukrainian regions and the Crimea Peninsula and to do without western military aid as well as NATO accession. Ukraine rejects these maximum demands as unacceptable and demands an immediate unconditional ceasefire.
