Israel’s procedure in Gaza causes criticism internationally. Now more than two dozen countries are calling for an end to the war. Meanwhile, Israel has opened a new front. UN organizations raise the alarm.
In a joint explanation, the foreign ministers of more than two dozen countries call for an immediate end of the war in the Gaza Strip and at the same time criticize Israel’s handling of humanitarian aid for the sealed area. “The war in Gaza has to be ended now,” says the text. “Further bloodshed does not serve any purpose.” The hostages continued in Gaza would have to be released immediately. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the declaration as “without reference to reality”.
The explanation would send a “wrong signal” to the Islamist Hamas, it said. The terrorist organization had started the war and was “alone” responsible for the fact that despite ongoing talks there had been no ceasefire and freedom of hostage, it was said by the Foreign Ministry.
The declaration was signed by 25 countries, including Italy, France, Austria, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Canada as well as by the EU Commissioner for Equality and Crisis Management. Greece, Cyprus and Malta are now also listed in a message from the British government. Germany is not one of the signatories.
Israel moves up in Deir al-Balah
Meanwhile, Israel’s military, according to eyewitnesses, first moved into the area of Deir al-Balah in the middle section of the Gaza Strip for the first time. Soldiers had brought buildings under their control in the southwest of the city and positioned snipers on the roofs. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Israeli army also stormed warehouses and other institutions of the UN organization in its advances.
“The military penetrated the facilities and forced women and children (the WHO employees) to flee to Al-Mawasi on foot in the middle of fighting,” complained WHO boss Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on X. In Deir al-Balah is also the central warehouse of the UN Organization for the Gaza Strip. This was damaged on Sunday, it said.
The other camps of the UN Aid organization were also in the combat zone defined by Israel and are therefore no longer in operation, the WHO boss continued. “This limits our ability to work in Gaza and brings the healthcare system closer to the collapse in Gaza.” The Israeli armed forces initially did not comment on the processes.
Unrwa boss: Distribution centers for help are “death traps”
The controversial Gaza Humanitrian Foundation (GHF) takes care of the distribution of food in large parts of the Gaza Strip. According to its own statements, Israel had introduced the new distribution mechanism to prevent Hamas from branching off. Again and again there are reports of fatal incidents near the GHF distribution points. The head of the UN aid for the Palestinians (Unrwa), Phillipe Lazarrini, described the distribution centers of the foundation as “sadistic death traps”.
“Hedge shooters arbitrarily open up the fire on crowds as if they had the license to kill. A massive hunting of people, with complete impunity,” he wrote to X. UN general secretary António Guterres said: “At the weekend there were further mass shootings and killings of people who were looking for un-help-a gruesome and inhumane act that I spent condemn. “
The GHF supported by the United States and Israel has repeatedly rejected such reports as wrong. Before the introduction of the new distribution mechanism by Israel, the UN had operated around 400 distribution stations for the approximately two million Palestinians. These still hardly work because Israel hardly allows its delivery. “Humanitarian aid is not a job for mercenaries,” said Lazzarini, referring to the fact that the GHF distribution centers are guarded by private American security companies.
Also worried about location in Gaza
The foreign ministers of the 25 countries also criticize Israel’s explanation with humanitarian aid: “The Israeli government’s model for the provision of auxiliary goods is dangerous, stir up instability and deprives people in the Gaza strip of their human dignity,” says the letter. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul (CDU) expressed his concerns about the “catastrophic humanitarian situation” in Gaza on X. He had phoned his Israeli colleague. “We urgently ask Israel to implement the agreements with the EU to enable humanitarian aid.”
Previously, Israel’s army had asked the people of several districts in Deir al-Balah to go to Al-Mawasi in the southwest. The tent settlement defines Israel as a safe retreat for civilians. However, there had also been Israeli attacks with many deaths in the past. So far, Israel had kept back militarily in Deir al-Balah because hostages are suspected by Islamist Hamas.
With the evacuation order for Deir al-Balah, according to the UN-Nothilfber Ocha, 87.8 percent of the area of the Gaza Strip under evacuation order or within Israel of military blocking areas are now. The population has now been crammed together to twelve percent of the Gaza strip. The coastal area on the Mediterranean is about as large as Munich.
