311 asylum seekers have been rejected to border since the beginning of May

Despite the sharp criticism, Federal Minister of the Interior Dobrindt records the rejection of asylum seekers at the German borders in May. The Federal Government is now presenting a balance sheet on request.

By July 9th, a total of 311 asylum seekers have been rejected at the German borders since Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU). This emerges from a response from the Federal Government to a small request from the AfD parliamentary group published on the website of the Bundestag.

It says: “In the period from May 8 to July 9, 2025, a total of 311 people were rejected at the German country borders who previously expressed an asylum application to the federal police.”

Dobrindt had an expansion of the controls at the German borders on May 7th. At the same time, asylum seekers should also be rejected for the first time – with the exception of vulnerable groups such as pregnant women or children.

Rejection of asylum seekers very controversial

A controversial procedure against which some of those affected also sued, including three Somalier, who were successful in front of the Berlin Administrative Court in early June. The court declared the rejection of asylum seekers at the German borders in an urgent procedure for illegal. The main procedure is still pending. According to Dobrindt, he wants to stick to the rejections until further notice and wait for the main procedure.

According to the Federal Government, a total of five main proceedings have been running since May 7, which are due to lawsuits against rejections at the German borders. In addition to Berlin, there are also processes in Aachen, Stuttgart, Schleswig and Munich.

A total of almost 7,000 people have been rejected by border since May

As the Federal Government continues, a total of 6,948 people were rejected during the increased controls at the German borders in the period mentioned above – for example because they did not have a valid travel document or a valid residence permit. This contains the number of rejected asylum seekers.

The Federal Government’s response does not contain a comparison to the same period last year. Almost 45,400 people were rejected on the German borders throughout 2024.

The tightened border controls also caused upset among European neighbors – for example in Poland, where fears are made that asylum seekers could be rejected at the German border and sent there on a large scale.

When asked to the Federal Government, what effects the rejections have had on relationships with neighboring countries since May, it is said: “The collaboration is still constructive and goal -oriented.” So far, no effects have been found on the basis of rejections.
