Vaccination rate still insufficient
For Spiegel, the falling number of infections is no reason to move away from the planned compulsory vaccination: “We must not be fooled by the declining number of cases, but must expect that dangerous mutations will also be on the way in the future. They can give us a difficult autumn and winter if we don’t significantly increase the vaccination rate.”
According to the latest data from the Robert Koch Institute, the vaccination campaign is still progressing slowly. SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich is also promoting general compulsory vaccination from the age of 18. “Compulsory vaccination is a suitable means of avoiding restrictions on freedom next winter. I have joined the draft law that would make vaccination compulsory from the age of 18,” he told the newspapers of the Funke media group. He is looking for a broad majority. He is also in discussion with the new Union faction leader Friedrich Merz (CDU).
Several draft laws on compulsory vaccination
The Bundestag has several draft laws on compulsory vaccination. A move by several MPs in the traffic light coalition is aimed at general vaccination requirements from the age of 18. The Union faction has submitted its own application, which initially only provides for a vaccination register and then a graduated plan with a possible vaccination obligation for certain groups depending on the pandemic situation.
There are also other competing drafts: one for mandatory advice and a possible vaccination requirement from the age of 50, one against mandatory vaccination. The traffic light partners have agreed on a first reading on March 14. A vote without the usual group discipline is planned.
