A new law, which limits the independence of anti -corruption organs, has led to the greatest protests in Ukraine since the beginning of the war. President Selenskyj wants to smooth the waves.
Against the background of new protests in several Ukrainian major cities, President Wolodymyr Selenskyj has announced a new law on the function of anti -corruption organs. He promised the answer to all the worries of the demonstrators and guarantee the independence of the authorities to combat corruption, he promised in his video message published in the evening. The head of state again accused the institutes “Russian influence”. The new law will prevent this. However, Selenskyj did not give details.
The day before, the parliament in Kiev had decided at a rapid pace, which largely subordinated the National Anti -corruption office (NABU) created in 2015 and the specialized anti -corruption prosecutor (SAP). Spontaneously, thousands of young people protested in several major cities against the amendment and demanded a veto of the president. This signed the law in the evening and it came into force immediately after the publication.
After the Prewestliche overthrow in Ukraine 2014, a system of organs was created with the help of the United States and the EU, which should primarily fight corruption in high -ranking politicians and in the administration. According to the non -governmental organization Transparency International, the Eastern European country is still one of the most corrupt states in Europe.
