Donald Trump travels to his mother’s home – he is not welcome there

Donald Trump undertakes his trip to Scotland, the country of birth of his mother. Activists have already announced protest.

On Friday, Donald Trump will travel to Scotland for five days. It is not an official visit to the state, Trump is in private mission: he owns two golf courses there. He wants to inaugurate one of them on his journey.

But there is no such thing as private life for a US president. And that’s why his visit to the island becomes a political issue. On the one hand because Trump also wants to meet Britain’s Premier Keir Strander and the Scottish Prime Minister John Swinney. And on the other hand, because because of his politics, he will not be welcomed with open arms. Scottish activists have already announced protests.

Scotland’s head of government called Trump visit “unthinkable”

According to the “Stop Trump Coalition”, unions, climate activists as well as supporters from Palestine and Ukraine are planning promotions. “The Scottish people don’t want to roll out the red carpet,” said a spokesman for the group. “His government accelerates climate change and the spread of fascism all over the world.” Among other things, the activists accuse the US President of disregarding the rights of migrants, disabled people and LGBT+people.

A demonstration is planned in the city center of Aberdeen. One of Trump’s golf courses is located near the city in the northeast of Scotland. The activists are covered for further protests, probably also because for security reasons there is little known about Trump’s exact schedule. When Trump visited Scotland in 2018 during his first term as US President, thousands demonstrated in the big cities.

Scotland’s head of government John Swinney is reluctant to sit down with the US President. He had given an official visit to Trump “unthinkable” in March after there were reports of an end to the US Ukraine aid. In the meantime, Swinney believes that a meeting with Trump is “in the interest of Scotland”.

Donald Trump’s mother was born in Scotland

For the Scottish police, visiting the President means the greatest commitment since Queen Elizabeth II’s death. Peaceful protest has been tolerated, the police announced – however, threatening behavior or the disturbance of events is expressly not among them.

Donald Trump goes on the footsteps of his own family by trip to Scotland. His mother Mary Anne Macleod Trump
was born on the Scottish island of Lewis and Harris in 1912, and at the age of 17 she emigrated to New York. The US President wants to name a new golf course according to her maiden name Macleod near Aberdeen.
