Dispute over nomination: CSU wants new judge candidates-Greens: “disrespectful”

The CSU wants to get the stuck dispute over the occupation of three posts at the Federal Constitutional Court in motion with a new compromise proposal. State group leader Alexander Hoffmann pleads for a personnel package that could consist of “completely new names”. In doing so, he signaled willingness to exchange the CDU candidate Günter Spinner.

SPD and green weirs advance

This is not well received by the coalition partner SPD and the Greens. Green Group leader Katharina Dröge even considered the “summit of disrespect” to the candidates that have already been nominated. The SPD referred to previous statements according to which it wants to stick to her two candidates.

So far, a possible withdrawal of the SPD candidate, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf criticized by many Union MPs, has been discussed, which is strictly rejected by the Social Democrats. With his proposal, Hoffmann is ready to do without the Federal Labritrust judge Günter Spinner nominated by the CDU and CSU. The third candidate, the constitutional lawyer Ann-Katrin Kaufhold, was also set up by the SPD.

Hoffmann: “We have to get out of this situation”

Hoffmann can imagine a withdrawal of all three candidates – or even from one or two. “We have to get out of this situation,” he told the German Press Agency. “Serenity is the order of the day, objectivity is the order of the day and the consideration of whether it can be possible via a new personnel package.”

Summer is used to come to a solution. “I personally believe that a new personnel package is most likely to come out,” said Hoffmann. He appealed on both sides not to have the discussion with mutual accusations, but with respect.

Dröge: “Damage to the German Bundestag”

Greens politician Dröge disrespectfully called the procedure of the CSU. “I wonder who should stand for election in the future if the CDU and CSU withdraw their consent so arbitrarily,” she told the dpa. “This is also damage to the German Bundestag.” The Greens would continue to support all three nominated candidates.

Klingbeil stuck to Brosius-Gersdorf

A spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group pointed out that, among other things, Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil was clearly positioned on the subject. The finance minister had said the “Bild am Sonntag” at the weekend that the election of the previous candidates should be put back on the agenda of the Bundestag. “All of this is valid,” said the speaker.

The election of the three candidates for the Federal Constitutional Court on July 11 was taken at short notice from the agenda of the Bundestag. The reason was the resistance within the Union faction.

Contrary to prior promises, the top of the parliamentary group could no longer guarantee the approval of the Brosius-Gersdorf. Around 60 MPs are said to have signaled the rejection of the Potsdam constitutional lawyer, who is criticized in the Union primarily because of her attitude towards abortions.

Justice Minister Hubig appeals to the Union faction

Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig appealed to the Union faction to accept a offer of discussion from Brosius-Gersdorf. “It is always good to talk to each other,” said the SPD politician in Karlsruhe.

She considers all three to be excellent, especially Brosius-Gersdorf. “In my view, it is important that there is a quick decision now,” said the minister. This is important for all those affected, also for the Federal Constitutional Court.
