It has been years since Selenskyj and Putin have met personally. A conversation could become essential in the negotiations for peace in Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, negotiators from Russia and Ukraine have started talks about a possible meeting of the Ukrainian head of state with his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin.
“We have to end the war and that probably starts with a meeting of the leaders,” said a Selenskyj’s declaration published on Friday. A possible format of such a meeting is already advised.
Putin would only speak to Selenskyj in the end
Putin had approved a meeting with Selenskyj in the past, but only in a “final phase” of possible negotiations on the end of the war in Ukraine. In the new direct talks between delegations from Moscow and Kiev on Wednesday in Istanbul, the Ukrainian chief delegated Rustem Umerow proposed a meeting of the heads of state before the end of August.
The Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinski, however, expressed skepticism about an early date. “The meeting must be prepared properly. Only then will it make sense,” said Medinski, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Representatives of Ukraine and Russia had agreed on another prisoner exchange during the talks in Istanbul. A settlement on an ceasefire in the Russian attack war on the Russian attack war, which has been going on for more than three years is still not in sight.
