Germany’s solidarity with Israel remains. France’s commitment to a Palestinian state does not change anything. But the humanitarian situation in Gaza doesn’t leave Berlin cold.
The Federal Government holds on its Middle East Course and rejects the recognition of a Palestinian state at the present time. “The Federal Government states that only a negotiated two-state solution will permanently bring peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians,” said government spokesman Stefan Kornelius. This must be achieved through negotiations in order to permanently bring peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians.
Israel’s security has “overarching importance” for the federal government, emphasized Kornelius. “In this respect, the federal government is not planning to recognize a Palestinian state at short notice.”
“The focus is now on the federal government to achieve overdue progress to the most urgent questions,” said the government spokesman. This included a ceasefire in the Gaza War, the release of the Israeli hostages through the Palestinian Hamas and the disarmament of Hamas. The government spokesman again asked Israel to “improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza immediately and drastically”. “It must give the suffering civilian population in a human -ranging, urgently needed care.”
In addition, a sustainable political perspective for Gaza is necessary so that a permanent ceasefire can become a permanent peace. Israel should also “take no further steps towards an annexation of the West Bank”.
Federal government wants to increase the pressure on Israel
For this purpose, the federal government is in constant exchange with the government of Israel and the international partners. “It is ready to increase the pressure if there is no progress,” said Kornelius. He left open what measures it could be. The SPD had recently been asked to stop the German arms exports after Israel and freeze the EU Association Agreement with Israel.

The Federal Government will continue its help to create the prerequisites for Palestinian statehood, said Kornelius. This includes the support of the autonomy authority.
German-Palestinian society demands commitment from Germany
Criticism came from the German-Palestinian Society (DPG). “It is time for the federal government to create complete facts and finally recognize the Palestinian state,” said the club on Friday. “In our opinion, the current German Middle East policy is not understandable.”
Germany holds onto the two-state solution, “but only verbal,” criticized the DPG. It is “shameful” that Germany puts itself against the stop of the war in the Gaza strip.
France President Emmanuel Macron had said on Thursday that he wanted to officially recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September. He justified the step with France’s “historical commitment to a fair and permanent peace in the Middle East”.
On Monday, 25 countries, including Great Britain, France and Italy, had called for an immediate end of the war in the Gaza Strip in a joint explanation. On Tuesday, three other countries and the EU Commission followed. The signing countries call for Israel “to meet its obligations according to humanitarian international law”. Germany is not part of the series of signatories.
