An SPD politician wants to rebel against the AfD-with a swastika on his ballot. But for the politician from Baden-Württemberg, the action backfires.
The SPD MP and President of the State Vice President in the Baden-Württemberg state parliament, Daniel Born, has resigned. The background is the swastika scandal when choosing the so-called Upper Rhine Council on Thursday. During the counting, the National Socialist symbol was discovered on a ballot.
The state administration then filed a criminal complaint against unknown persons and handed over the smeared paper to the police. Landtag President Muhterem Aras (Greens) asked the person responsible for the smear on Friday, his or “mandate immediately”.
Daniel Born worried about AfD
Now Daniel Born confessed to the smear on the ballot. In an explanation, he wrote about a “short -circuit reaction” and a “serious mistake”. He had noted a swastika sign behind the name of an AfD MP when he secretly coordinated the Oberrheinrat.
However, Born emphasized that it was never his intention to assume the AfD. “In a short -circuit reaction, I wanted to show that votes for the AfD, regardless of the choice, are always votes for right hatred and agitation.”
“As deputy president of the state parliament, it was the greatest honor of my life,” wrote Born. The AfD is a secured right -wing extremist, which contained democracy. The increasing getting used to the AfD no longer gives him a quiet minute.

With a swastika smeared ballot papers invalid
The Upper Rhine Council is a cross -border body for political advice. Delegations from Baden-Württemberg, the French region of Grand Est, several Swiss cantons and from Rhineland-Palatinate sit in it. On Thursday, two AfD MPs in Stuttgart stood for the election as deputy parliamentary members for the Oberrheinrat.
In the end, both of them did not get enough voices. According to the state parliament, this was marked with a swastika on a ballot for AfD politician Bernhard Eisenhut. That was noticed in the count. The choice was valid, but the ballot in question was not evaluated.
SPD parliamentary group leader Andreas Stoch spoke of a serious mistake that Born had made. “For my faction and me, it is consistent and correct that he has resigned from his office as Vice President of the state parliament and also explained his exit from the parliamentary group.”
In the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg, a ballot was smeared with a swastika on Thursday in a secret tuning. Landtag President Muhterem Aras (Greens) spoke of a shame for the state parliament. In the plenum she said: “This is a crime”. All political groups had also been shaken.
