Fighting has been fought for days on the border between Thailand and Cambodia. Now the US President intervenes – and arouses hopes for the silence of weapons.
After the escalation of the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, US President Donald Trump pushes onto a ceasefire – and is optimistic after conversations with both sides. “They agreed to meet immediately and quickly work out a ceasefire and ultimately peace!”, The Republican wrote on the Truth Social. “It was an honor for me to negotiate with both countries.”
Previously, Trump had spoken to the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Thai head of the Minister of the Minister Phumham Wechayachai in separate phone calls. “By chance we are negotiating with both countries about our trade relationships, but we don’t want to close a deal with any of the two countries if they fight – and I told them too!” Wrote Trump.
The conflict between the two Southeast Asian neighbors has been smoldering for decades – and has been dangerously escalated since Thursday. After changing the fires on the border, the Thai military, according to combat jets, had used fighter jets against Cambodian positions. Cambodia reacted with artillery fire, also to residential areas. Among other things, a petrol station and a hospital were hit. Who shot first is still unclear. Both sides are blamed for each other.
Trump moves parallel to India-Pakistan conflict
Trump, who is currently visiting Scotland, emphasized Truth Social, he tries to simplify a complex situation. Many people are killed, it reminded him very much of the recent conflict between Pakistan and India, which has been successfully settled. In the conflict between the two nuclear powers, Trump, according to his own representation, had conveyed a ceasefire that was announced in May. Pakistan then explained Trump to propose for the Nobel Peace Prize for his broker role – India contested the fact that the United States had conveyed.
