Talks between Thailand and Cambodia started
After international pressure, a top meeting between Thailand and Cambodia has started in Malaysia. Is there a break of fire?
The meeting between the heads of the Thailand and Cambodia heads of a possible ceasefire in the conflict between the two countries has started. This was reported by Malaysian state media. Videos spread on social networks showed how Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s transitional Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayhai arrived in the Malaysian city of Putrajaya in the afternoon (local time).
A border dispute, which had been smoldering for decades, escalated between the two neighboring countries on Thursday. Since then there have been serious fights with dead and injured on both sides. Tens of thousands of people are on the run.
The United States in particular had pushed for a meeting between the parties to the conflict since the weekend. US President Donald Trump personally put pressure on both heads of government. Representatives from the USA, China and Malaysia also take part in the talks, as it was said in advance.
