The number of cases of “gang abuse” for citizenship money rose drastically in 2024. The Union demands sharper rules to manage the green.
According to a report by the “Rheinische Post”, the job centers in Germany recorded 421 cases of “gang abuse of performance” for citizens’ fees last year – a significant increase compared to the previous year. As the newspaper continued in its Monday edition, citing the Federal Government’s answers to a small request from the Greens parliamentary group, there were still 229 cases in 2023.
In 2024, according to “Rheinischer Post”, 209 cases of citizenship abuse led to an advertisement, 52 in the previous year. A total of around 5.5 million people recently received citizens’ money.
Debate about “abuse of performance”: Greens do not want “polemical mood”
Within the federal government, the Union parties ‘side had had demands for a significant tightening of the rules for the reference to the citizens’ allowance. Last week, CDU general secretary Carsten Linnemann had pushed for a complete cancellation of services for those who want to work.
The Green member of the Bundestag, Timon Dzenius, demanded more objectivity to the “Rheinische Post”, however, “more objectivity instead of polemical mood”. The deputy Greens parliamentary group leader Andreas Audretsch said that, in his opinion, the government could save significantly less than announced in the case of citizens’ money. “Friedrich Merz and Carsten Linnemann wanted to save billions in the citizens’ allowance,” said Audretch, adding: “The federal government has not even made calculations on this. This will be the next big word fracture.”
