Klingbeil swears coalition to larger savings constraints

When visiting the finance minister in Lithuania, it is about billions: for a stronger defense in Europe – but also at the federal budget at home.

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil swears the black and red coalition to larger foreseeable savings constraints. “The budget 2027 will be an enormous challenge for the government,” said the SPD politician on the sidelines of a visit to the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. Every minister will demand something and only work if everyone is ready to move. You can’t wait long. It now starts that all departments would have to look where you can save.

Klingbeil brings his draft for the 2026 budget this Wednesday. In the financial planning, which is part of it, there is a gap of around 172 billion euros in 2027 to 2029, as was said in advance from government circles.

The minister emphasized that the budget for next year was seriously financed after intensive consultations. It is a clear signal that the government is now presenting a second household in a very short time. The budget 2025 is currently in consultation and is to be decided in September.
